Beginning Archery
The Archers of Greenwood offer's a program to beginner archers.
The 6 week beginner's course will cost $80 and is designed to teach you the fundamentals of target archery. This course is usually done (and paid for) in two blocks of 3 weeks. The cost of the first block is $45. The cost of the second block is $35.
This fee entitles you to the purchase of your own Personal Protection Equipment (Finger Tab and Armguard), basic training aid and instruction handbook.
Beginner archers need to be aged 10 years or older and have reasonable shoulder movement. (We also offer a restricted membersip to 8 year olds but you will need to discuss this with us first).
The sessions are from 9:00am to 11:00am on Saturday mornings (except for Club competition days*).
The first week of the course will be on safety and learning the correct stance, anchor and release. (Shooting at targets may not happen until the 2nd week). Over the next few weeks, archers will learn to score on targets raging in distance from 10 meters up to 40 meters. The cost of this 6 week course is $80.
Anyone who is interested in this course is invited to come along any Saturday morning, have a look and talk about the club. The sessions are from 9:00am to 11:00am on Saturday mornings (except for Club competition days*). We will ask you to fill in all the appropriate paperwork and book in for the next course.
Archery safety is paramount to us. We will teach you how to be safe at archery. Here are a few things to wear on your first day of your 6 week beginner's course.
- Wear closed in shoes
- Wear a top that does not flap around.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen
There are other safety rules to be aware of. We will teach you these rules on the first day.
- Obey the whistle commands.
- Stand with both feet either side of the shooting line.
- No loading the bow if you're not on the line.
- No firing a bow without an arrow (Dry firing).
- Wear protective equipment (Armguard and Fingertab).
- Running on the range is not allowed.
- Stand to the side of the target when pulling out arrows.
The course moves at your own pace. We have found that different people learn archery best if they go at their pace.
Our coaches are nationally accredited. Coaches have the knowledge and expertise to get you shooting the middle of the target by the end of the 6 week beginner's course.
Do not let a disability stop you from trying archery. People who have sensory difficulties or are vision impaired or amputees or any other disability can often shoot very well. It is wise to talk to our club president or to our lead coach about archery and how your disability affects you before your first day.
If you find that running around sports are not for you, then archery may suit you very well.
A certificate of achievement will be given on completion of the course (on the 7th week).
The beginner archer will usually be invited to join the club at the completion of the 6 week beginner's course.
Some people have done archery before and may have their own equipment. If that is you, be patient with us. You will need to show us your archery skills by having your ability assessed or by doing the beginner course.
